Chapter 8

Thunder rolled and rain pelted the windows. Elle studied the chessboard in concentration. It had been raining all day, keeping Anders inside. After breakfast he’d pulled out the chessboard and at the moment they were in a hot competition. He’d won the first game and she’d won the second. This was the playoff to determine the house chess champion.

“Who taught you how to play?” he asked her.

“Bo taught me some and then in high school I joined the chess club,” she replied.

“I’ll bet you were cute in high school,” he said. “I can just see you strutting the halls with your backpack in a short skirt and your chess club sweater.”

She gave him a baleful look. “I didn’t have a chess club sweater and stop trying to distract me. It’s not going to work. I intend to beat your butt.”

He laughed and then leaned back in his chair. “Do you intend to make your next move anytime soon?”

“Great moves take time,” she replied. The truth of the matter was even if he didn’t talk to her she found him ridiculously distracting.

His scent wafted in the air and she wasn’t oblivious to the way his gaze lingered on her a little too long. Thunder once again boomed overhead and she finally made her move.

“Ha, not such a great move,” he said as his bishop took her queen.

“A truly great move,” she replied. She moved her castle. “I believe that’s checkmate.”

He stared at the board in obvious astonishment. “Well, I’ll be damned,” he exclaimed.

“I believe that makes me the chess champion of the cabin,” she said. “And I also believe that puts you on diaper duty for the rest of the day.” She leaned back in her chair and grinned at him.

He chuckled once again and stood. “But you’re still on lunch duty and I’m starving.”

She got up from the table and began to pull cold cuts out of the refrigerator while he put the chessboard and pieces away.

Minutes later they sat at the table with ham-and-cheese sandwiches and chips. “If it stops raining later this afternoon, what do you think about the three of us going into town for dinner?” he asked.

The idea of getting dressed up and going out for a nice meal was appealing. Too appealing. It would feel like a date. It would feel like a family having a night out. And she wasn’t dating Anders, nor was she part of his family. She was here working on a case.

“I really don’t think that’s a good idea,” she replied. “I don’t want to leave the cabin. We don’t know if whoever was in here before might not come back.”

He looked disappointed. “I guess you’re right. I just thought it would be nice to get out of these four walls for a little while. Oh well, I’ll just have to make a really special dinner here tonight.”

“Anything is fine for dinner,” she replied. “You don’t have to go to any trouble on my account.” She looked out the window and sighed.
